In the sacred Mayan calendar, 9 Tz’i carries the energy of integrity, devotion, and sacred law. Tz’i is the nawal of the dog—loyal, faithful, and guided by an inner moral compass rather than external rules. It governs ethics, truth, justice, commitments, and the invisible agreements we hold with ourselves, others, and the world. The number 9 brings depth, patience, gestation, and completion through perseverance; it asks us to stay with the process even when clarity unfolds slowly. Together, 9 Tz’i invites us to examine what we stand for, how we show up, and whether our actions align with our values. This is a day to recommit—to honesty, to right relationship, and to the quiet discipline of living with integrity.
Lately, I have been recommitting to the steady, everyday work of integrity.
I’ve returned to a formal meditation practice and, as of today, I’ve sat for 42 days in a row (thank you, Insight Timer). I’m recommitting to eating more whole, nourishing foods and stepping away from the sugary, packaged, and processed things that spike my blood sugar. I’m recommitting to breathing deeply and consciously as a daily devotion. Perhaps most importantly, I’m recommitting to being more gentle with myself and with the people I love.
This season is asking for patience and devotion in a real way as I parent a young teenager. She is defiant, fiercely independent, protective of anyone she perceives as being treated unfairly, and deeply committed to doing whatever she wants whenever she wants. In my opinion, this includes too much scrolling on her phone and too much concern about what other people think or say. Parenting her calls me into discernment: when to hold boundaries, when to soften, when to listen, and when to simply stay present without fixing or controlling.
9 Tz’i is lived integrity: sustained devotion to what matters, plus the patience to keep showing up. The willingness to let my words be thoughtful, my actions aligned, and my heart open and loving, even when it would be easier to react or withdraw.
Maltiox, Tz’i, for the power of my words.
Maltiox for the love in my heart.
Maltiox for the loyalty I feel to my family, my friends, and the values I most cherish: presence, gratitude, kindness, joy, and compassion.
May I continue to live these values sincerely, day by day and breath by breath.
