Eagle Eye Vision: The Tz’ikin Trecena

We’re now entering the trecena of Tz’ikin, nawal of the birds. In the Mayan cosmovision, birds are great teachers of joy. Their singing every day reminds humans to be happy and to smile and laugh more.

The eagle in particular is the spirit animal of Tz’ikin, a powerful hunter who soars majestically high above the earth and has incredibly sharp vision.

This nawal and 13-day period is thus related to long-term vision (the birds-eye view), prosperity, abundance and bliss.

According to Mark Elmy of The Four Pillars, “Your elder symbolises your personal future, but also your children. I believe this energy becomes very noticeable at the age of 42.5 when it overtakes your deer energy, peaking at the age of 52.” In my case, my elder energy is 1 Tz’ikin.

To find out yours, go to Mayancross.com and enter your birthday. Your main energy is in the center and your elder energy appears below it. Note that a dot represents 1, a bar is 5 in the Mayan calendar system. So two bars and three dots would equal 13, for example.

To commemorate this day, we’ll celebrate with a fire ceremony at our home to give thanks for our land and family and to ask and pray for continued abundance of love, joy, prosperity and harmony.

This is the penultimate trecena of the whole sacred Mayan calendar cycle, as well, in the tradition of the living Maya in the Guatemalan highlands. After the subsequent Q’anil trecena, we’ll begin anew with 1 Imox and a fresh 260-day period of spiraling time and energies.

Check out the wondrous energies of each day in this trecena:

1 Tz’ikin – A new vision. As the eagle soars, feel the joyfulness of flight, glide in the abundance of this life, and enjoy the prosperity that comes with inner and outer peace.

2 Ajmaq – Make a decision to forgive (or not). Connect with ancestral wisdom to guide you in your new vision and your relationships.

3 No’j – Focus the power of the mind inward. Meditate on thoughts, allowing them to flow without attachment or aversion.

4 Tijax – A day of grounded healing, letting go of the old, and inviting in the new. Cut away what no longer serves you on the level of the earth plane.

5 Kawoq – Make a sustained effort to continue growing on your path. Connect with turtle energy. Be like a midwife who brings ideas and vision to life.

6 Ajpu – Embrace the ultimate stability of the sun within you. Contemplate your divine and natural path as a human being.

7 Imox – Look around at the panoramic view; many choices are available to you. Speak with the water, connecting with cosmic consciousness and the timeless book of memory.

8 Iq – Return of the hummingbird medicine. Do a ritual to give thanks for your breath and your ability to express yourself clearly and compassionately through language.

9 Aq’ab’al – An ideal day for light/shadow work, meditating on the in-between spaces, and honoring the divine feminine.

10 K’at – Manifestation of an abundant harvest. Focus on community connections and the power of social networks and the hive mind.

11 Kan – Unpredictable and potent serpent energy. Indulge in creative movement and take pleasure in the art of distraction.

12 Kame – Reflect on your life’s experiences as they relate to birth, death and transformation.

13 Kej – Connect with the spirit world by spending time in the wilderness today, even if only in your mind’s eye. Feel the power of the four directions and the grace of the deer.
