Forgiving, Not Forgetting: The Ajmaq Trecena
Every day is an opportunity to cultivate love and practice forgiveness and gratitude, especially in the coming 13 days of the sacred Mayan calendar.
Pause at least once during your day to employ the technique of repeating in your mind these four simple statements associated with the Hawaiian practice of Ho'oponopono:
I’m sorry
Please forgive me
I love you
Thank you
Today is 1 Ajmaq in the Mayan Calendar. My friend Mark Elmy, who has written daily about the energies of the Mayan Calendar for years, writes, “Today begins the trecena of Ajmak, which can be seen as a period of redemption and reconciliation. It brings the possibility to bring happiness, the sweetness, into the world through forgiveness.”
My 10-year-old daughter is Ajmaq. She’s an old soul full of wisdom. She’s loving, creative and modest. And moody. She gets angry or upset easily but typically forgives easily.
The quality of forgiveness of Ajmaq is not associated with forgetting or letting go. Ajmaq is actually associated with ancestral wisdom, a.k.a. remembering. The spirit animals of this nawal are owl, vulture and bee.
According to the wonderful book on the Mayan nahuales and cosmovision, The Book of Destiny, by Carlos Barrios, “Ajmaq is the most auspicious day to ask for and offer forgiveness, atone for our sins, and avoid confrontation. It is also a good day to cure all types of illnesses, defend the dispossessed, seek justice and achieve harmony with Mother Earth.”
If you’re intrigued by the sacred Mayan calendar and would like to explore it in a deeper way, join me at the Heart Wisdom retreat in Guatemala from December 9–15, 2023!
Here are the days of this trecena:

3 Tijax – Looking within, meditate on self-healing, letting go and moving forward with the process of forgiveness.
4 Kawoq – Ground yourself in the healing process here in the physical world. What lessons are you learning? How are you cultivating compassion?
5 Ajpu – Put forth all your effort today. Work on your path of practice, embracing the heat and light of the sun with gratitude. What is the next step on your personal hero’s journey?
6 Imox – Feel a sense of infinite connection with the collective consciousness. Pay attention to dreams and family. Connect with a natural body of water.
7 Iq – Catch the inspiration of the wind at the apex of the pyramid. Let your imagination run wild. Strong day for clear communication.
8 Aq’ab’al – Honor the miraculous beauty of sunrise and sunset. The dawning of new concepts and ideas. Do a ritual of gratitude to both light and shadow, yin and yang.
9 K’at – On the road of life, what are you carrying forward and what are you ready to release? Connect with your network of like-minded, powerful women.
10 Kan – Manifest the wisdom teachings by modeling them authentically in your daily life. Connect with the community. Practice kundalini yoga and energetic healing.
11 Kame – Ponder death and transformation. An excellent day for wandering, spontaneity and creativity.
