13 Kan — Entering the World

Today, 13 Kan invites us to connect with the intellect and knowledge of the ancestors, to seek the wise understanding that comes from Spirit, and to honor the serpent wisdom that has guided us through this trecena.

Meditation

Close your eyes and feel the base of your spine. There, coiled and waiting, is the serpent: your life force, kundalini, or inner fire. Breathe into this space. Feel the serpent uncoiling, rising up your spine. Feel it move through each chakra—root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, and crown. As it reaches the top of your head, the serpent transforms into pure light, consciousness, and wisdom. You are connected to Spirit and the ancestors. Ask: what do I need to know? Listen. The wisdom is inside you.

Poem

Entering the world from darkness and safety of mother’s womb, pulled out by metal forceps into the glaring light of a hospital room.

A rude awakening, I’d say. May 30, 1980. A Friday. A full moon. 4:54 PM. Just another ordinary moment. The moment of my birth.

Entering the world again in April 1989. The darkness of the storm, my eyes shut tight against that tornado, against death, obliteration, and fear. The depth of fear of an eight-year-old girl child huddled on a linoleum floor, honestly believing her short life was about to end forever. It took months for me to re-enter the world of light, hope, and play.

Entering the world again at 15. Rebel with a cause: getting away from my mother and any semblance of being like her. I chose drinking, partying, dysfunctional dating, not valuing myself, despite all the yoga. The wild rebellion went on erratically but lasted, no doubt, from 1995 to 2012, when I finally settled down to nest with mi amor and prepare for the arrival of Jade, our rare and precious hija.

Re-entering the world as a mother, a wife, one side of the triangle of our family.

Re-entering the world with each era, each stage, each lifetime within this lifetime.

As 13 Kan teaches, we shed our skin again and again. We are born again and again. Each time, we rise with more wisdom. Each time, the serpent climbs a little higher.

Maltiox, Nawal Kan.
