3 Toj — Silence, Gratitude, and Wholeness

Toj is the nawal of sacred fire, offerings, and gratitude, representing the spiritual practice of giving thanks for all that sustains us and recognizing that reciprocity is the foundation of right relationship with life, the Earth, and the divine. This energy teaches that gratitude calls for active participation: we express our thanks through ceremony, offerings, and the way we tend the sacred fire within ourselves and in community.

3 brings the energy of action, movement, and activation—the spark that ignites, the moment when intention transforms into embodied reality. Today, 3 Toj invites us to light the fire of gratitude in our lives through contemplation: make an offering, give back, and honor what you have received.

This is the third day of the Kej trecena, deepening our grounding by reminding us that balance comes from the sacred exchange between giving and receiving. 3 Toj whispers: gratitude is a practice, so tend the fire, make the offering, and watch how generosity transforms everything.

Yesterday, I reached 100 consecutive days of meditation.

I know this because I’ve been using the Insight Timer app each of those days, watching the numbers climb—a tally of a commitment I made to myself a few months ago. One hundred days. That’s over three months of showing up to the cushion, the breath, and the silence beneath the noise.

But yesterday was unusual. I worked, then spent time in the sauna—so relaxing and purifying. I came home, ate chicken soup lovingly prepared by my partner, watched a nature documentary with him, and fell asleep early.

And then, in a half-asleep state between dreaming and waking, I realized: I hadn’t meditated. I was too tired to get up. But sometime later, I woke to go to the bathroom, glanced at my phone, and saw it was only 11:45 PM.

I grabbed my phone, opened the app, and sat on the toilet. Eight minutes. Enough to keep the flame burning, to honor the practice, commitment, and sacred practice I’ve been tending for 100 days.

I made it. And I will keep going.

Toj is the nawal of offerings, of gratitude made tangible through action. We must do something with that gratitude. We must feed the fire. We must show up, even when it would be easier not to.

The 3 brings activation, movement, the moment when intention becomes embodied reality. And that’s what happened at 11:45 PM: gratitude became practice. Devotion became action. The fire, which could have flickered out, was fed.

Today is the day of silence, offerings, sacred fire, sacred water, and deep listening. Today is a day for us to reconnect with the path of wholeness, the path of awareness, and the path of peace.

Toj teaches that gratitude is reciprocity. It is the sacred exchange between giving and receiving. I have received so much from my meditation practice—clarity, groundedness, resilience, the ability to sit with discomfort without running, the capacity to feel joy without clinging. And so I give back.

I give back through my smile and my laughter. Through my eyes and ears, my smell and taste. Through being fully present in each moment, with each person, with myself.

I give back through showing up to the cushion, even at 11:45 PM when I am half-asleep and could instead let it go. The sacred fire within me is steady and small. It flickers sometimes. But it does not go out.

That is the practice. That is the offering.

One hundred days and counting.

Maltiox, Nawal Toj. Thank you for the fire.
