12 Kan – The Feathered Serpent Rises

Kan is the nawal of the feathered serpent, Kukulkan—the sacred union of earth and sky, matter and spirit, embodiment and transcendence—representing the powerful life force energy that rises from the earth through our bodies and connects us to the divine. This energy is raw power, kundalini awakening, sexual vitality, and creative fire; it is the serpent wisdom that sheds old skins, transforms pain into medicine, and reminds us that our bodies are sacred vessels for spirit to move through.

The number 12 brings understanding, complex problems that require wisdom to navigate, and the energy of wholeness. It is a day that asks us to integrate all parts of ourselves and to recognize that true power comes from alignment between our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies.

Today, 12 Kan invites us to embody our full power without apology: to feel the vital force moving through our spine, to honor the creative and sexual energy as sacred, and to stand tall in the truth that we are both earthly and divine, human and holy.

This is the fourth of five days in the Tz’apin Q’ij, asking us to prepare for rebirth by defining what we want to manifest in the coming year. It’s the final moment to shed the old skin of who we were and an auspicious time to step into the radiance of who we are becoming. Your body is a temple to inhabit and the serpent power within you is rising to meet the new year.

I am shedding my old self. Deliberately, the way a serpent slides out of skin that no longer fits.

I am shedding my past traumas and dramas. The stories I’ve told myself about what happened and what it meant. The weight of carrying wounds. I am shedding my clinging to a plan for the future, that need to know, control, and map every step before I take it. I am shedding the veils that block me from living fully and presently, here in this body, on this earth, in this moment.

Goodbye, old snakeskin. Thank you for protecting and supporting me. Thank you for the hard-won moments of transformation. Thank you for your service to my body, mind, and heart. I shed you willingly, gratefully, and completely.

Kan teaches us that the serpent does not mourn the skin it leaves behind. It does not cling to what once served but no longer fits. It just releases and becomes more of what it always was.

On this fourth day of the Tz’apin Q’ij, I feel ready for a rebirth. Ready to feel the softness of my new skin, tender and soft. Ready to ride the wave of where the coming year (and the next 13 years, and this whole lifetime) will take me. The number 12 asks for understanding, integration, and wholeness. I know I cannot control the future; I can only prepare myself to meet it with presence.

My definition of the new year is to invite expansiveness.

How?

Through my growing devotion to my meditation practice and inner exploration. Through my breath and pranayama, the sacred wind that connects the body to spirit. Through my body: yoga asana, walking, bicycling, and exercise. And through travel to new places, outer exploration to match the inner.

The day after tomorrow, we enter the Year of the Deer. But today, I honor the snake. The one who taught me how to shed. How to transform. How to rise. (Serendipity! Today is the last day of the Year of the Wood Snake in the Chinese lunar calendar. Tomorrow, we welcome the Year of the Fire Horse.)

Maltiox, Nawal Kan. Thank you for the power. Thank you for the fire. Thank you for showing me that rebirth is not something that happens to us—it is something we choose, again and again, with every skin we are willing to leave behind.
