13 Kame – Releasing the Old Cycle

Kame is the nawal of death and transformation. Death is the most profound portal of change, the metaphorical sacred threshold between what was and what will be, the dark womb from which all new life emerges. This energy honors the ancestors who walk beside us, the lineages of wisdom that live in our blood and bones and shape the people we are becoming.

13 is a sacred number in the Mayan cosmovision. Representing completion, cosmic power, and the full expression of a nawal’s energy, it is a day of maximum spiritual potency, when the veil between worlds is thin and the ancestors are especially close. Today, 13 Kame creates the most powerful portal of transformation in this trecena: the final day of the Tz’apin Q’ij, the last breath before the Mayan New Year dawns, the figurative death of the old cycle so that 1 Kej can be born.

On 13 Kame, we honor all that has died (such as relationships, identities, illusions, and old versions of ourselves) and give deep gratitude to the ancestors whose sacrifices and wisdom made our lives possible. 13 Kame asks us to bow before the mystery of death and rebirth, to release anything nonessential we are still clutching from the old year, and to cross the threshold into the year of 1 Kej with an open heart.

What dies?

The ego. The personality construct. The physical body. Memory.

What lives on?

Consciousness. Energy.

On this final day of the Tz’apin Q’ij, the fifth and last day of sacred pause before the New Year, Kame asks us to sit with these questions.

Everything we think we are will eventually dissolve. And yet something continues and has always continued.

13 is one of the most potent numbers in the Mayan cosmovision, representing the full flowering of a nawal’s power. Today, Kame blooms at its most intense: the veil between worlds is thin, the ancestors are pressing close, and the old cycle is breathing its last breath.

I give thanks for the red, black, yellow, and white ancestors—the four directions, the four peoples, the full spectrum of human lineage that has spiraled through time to arrive at this moment, here and now.

Thank you to the ancestors. Thank you for your toils and struggles, for your celebrations and traditions, for your teachings, and for dreaming us into creation. We are here because you were here. We carry your wisdom in our cells and your wounds in our patterns. Today, on 13 Kame, we honor all of it. We release what was passed down in pain. We receive what was passed down in love.

Because death is the only thing that makes room for new life. The compost of our old selves feeds the garden of who we are becoming.

Today I lay down what is ready to die. I let go of fear, blame, and shame. In their place, I invite what wants to be born into 1 Kej: Strength. Flexibility. Courage. Power. Groundedness. Presence. Joy.

The Deer stands at the threshold, patient and alert, rooted in the earth and poised to move. Tomorrow we step into a new year. Today we die so that we may truly live. Maltiox. Maltiox. Maltiox.
