2 Toj — A Relationship with Gratitude

In the sacred Mayan calendar, 2 Toj carries the energy of sacred exchange, reciprocity, and relationship. Toj is the nawal of offerings, payment, forgiveness, and the spiritual law of balance—what we give, what we receive, and what must be made right. The number 2 brings duality, choice, and partnership, highlighting how our actions ripple through our relationships with others, with the Earth, and with spirit. Together, 2 Toj asks us to examine where balance has been disrupted and where conscious offerings of time, attention, humility, or gratitude can restore harmony. This is a day to remember that giving is not sacrifice, but participation in the living web of life. It is a day to embrace silence and truly listen.

To be honest, I’m in a bit of a funk today.

I feel tired and irritable. I didn’t sleep well last night. I feel easily annoyed, a little lazy, and low on motivation. Despite all of that, I still showed up. I did some writing practice. I took a some deep, conscious breaths. I sat for a seven-minute meditation on gratitude. Okay, lied down. Supine pose.

Today, for me, 2 Toj is not a polished, ceremonial offering. It is the simple act of giving what I actually have today, instead of what I wish I had.

Even on a morning that doesn’t feel like the greatest, gratitude is still here. It’s quieter, softer, and less performative, yet it’s real. I’m grateful for the freedom to bask in a slow morning, lying on the balcony in the sun, letting my body rest. I’m grateful for my family. For the quiet peace around me today. For the teachings. For the practices of yoga and mindfulness that meet me even when my energy is low.

2 Toj reminds me that balance isn’t restored by forcing myself into a better mood. It’s restored through honesty. Through offering presence instead of perfection. Through staying in relationship with life as it is.

Today, my offering is gentleness. My payment is patience. My reciprocity is not abandoning or berating myself when I feel off.

I give thanks for the Buddha, the dharma, and the sangha and for the reminder that practice isn’t about feeling good, it’s about staying awake. Staying connected. Returning again and again.

Maltiox, Nawal Toj, for this day.

Maltiox for the breath.

Maltiox for my willingness to keep showing up.

That is enough today.
