In the sacred Mayan calendar, 1 Q’anil marks a fresh beginning centered on growth, fertility, and the promise held within every seed. Q’anil is the nawal of seeds, ripening, flowering, beauty, and natural abundance. It governs creativity, attraction, sexuality, and the life force that longs to grow toward the light. This energy reminds us that everything begins small, unseen, and full of potential.
The number 1 brings initiation, clarity of intention, and the planting of a new cycle. On 1 Q’anil, we are invited to become conscious gardeners of our lives, noticing what we are planting through our thoughts, choices, habits, and relationships. This is a day for setting conditions that support healthy growth: nourishment, patience, and trust in natural timing.
1 Q’anil also opens the 13-day Q’anil trecena, a cycle devoted to cultivating what is ready to grow and allowing what has matured to ripen fully. Over the next 13 days, we are asked to tend our inner and outer gardens with care, feeding what brings vitality, beauty, pleasure, and meaning and removing weeds. This trecena highlights the relationship between effort and surrender: we plant and tend but cannot force the bloom.
Q’anil teaches that growth happens when we align with the rhythms of nature and our own bodies. As this trecena begins, reflect on what seeds you are planting now—physically, emotionally, creatively, and spiritually—and commit to nurturing them with consistency and love.
May this cycle bring fertile ground, healthy growth, and the patience to trust what is unfolding beneath the surface.
Maltiox, Nawal Q’anil.
Writing Prompt: What am I tending with care right now? How can I trust its ripening without rushing the bloom?
Return to these question each day. Let them meet you differently as the seed grows roots, stem, leaves, and fruit.
On 1 Q’anil, I am thinking about what wants to ripen.
Q’anil reminds me that growth is often invisible at first, happening beneath the surface, in darkness, in trust. The number 1 brings initiation, a subtle yet potent beginning.
What I would love to see ripening right now is an exciting new editing project, and my own daily writing practice of showing up to write about the energy of the day in the sacred Mayan calendar, paired with a personal reflection, in prose or poety.
With this daily writing, I wake up, feel into the day’s energy, listen, and write. To be in relationship with time, energy, and my own inner life. Some days the words come easily; other days, they arrive slowly or not at all. Still, I tend the garden.
The editing project feels like a parallel field. A place where my love of language, discernment, patience, and creative intelligence come together. It asks me to trust my eye, my intuition, my capacity to shape something beautiful and coherent from the author’s manuscript. It is only just beginning. It is ripening.
Q’anil teaches me that abundance is returning again and again to what matters, even when no one is watching. Gratitude for the abundance all around me feeds my joy, heart-centeredness, and presence.
I do not need to know exactly where this leads. Seeds do not know the fruit they will become. They only know how to reach for light when the time is right.
So today, I water what I love. I protect what is tender. I trust the timing. I allow myself to believe that something beautiful is forming. Happy Q’anil Trecena!
