4 Kan – Body Wisdom, Earth Wisdom

In the sacred Mayan calendar, 4 Kan brings grounding and structure to life force energy, wisdom, and embodied truth. Kan is the nawal of the serpent: vitality, intuition, creative power, and the instinctual knowing that lives in the body. It teaches discernment: the ability to sense the difference between illusion and what truly nourishes us. The number 4 provides stability, foundation, and containment, helping raw energy become usable wisdom. Under 4 Kan, we are invited to ground our life force into clear values, healthy boundaries, and choices that support long-term well-being rather than short-term gratification.

In 2011, I knew I was finished with living in Guatemala City after three intense school years there, but I didn’t yet know where I would go next. Two divergent possibilities stood before me: the relatively nearby Lake Atitlán, or the vast continent of Asia on the other side of the globe. It felt like a true fork in the road.

I remember a lightning-strike moment on one of my early visits to the lake. My heart felt instantly at home. Standing among the lush flora, surrounded by water and mountains, I was overcome with a sense of belonging so strong that I cried tears of joy and recognition. It wasn’t dramatic or intellectual—it was cellular. My body knew.

That same feeling visited me again in Guatemala City, unexpectedly, while practicing yoga alone in my bedroom. In a standing backbend position, breath moving gently through me, a deep knowing surfaced. A serene intuition pulling me toward Lake Atitlán. It was the kind of clarity that doesn’t explain itself. It simply is.

I am still drawn to the idea of slow, intentional travel in Asia, especially Japan, Bhutan, and Thailand. That curiosity hasn’t disappeared. But Guatemala is home. I have found peace here. Community. Contentment. Healing. Near the shores of this lake, my nervous system softened, my spirit settled, and my life took root in miraculous ways I could not have planned.

Looking back, I see that the choice was never really between places. It was between listening to the mind’s fascination and honoring the body’s truth. Lake Atitlán called me, and I answered.
