Birth and Rebirth on the Path
Entering the world from the darkness and safety of mother’s womb, from the before-time when I was one with everything in the soul world, I was pulled out by a doctor’s metal forceps into the glaring light of a hospital room. A rude awakening. May 30, 1980. A Friday. A full moon. 4:54 in the afternoon. Just another ordinary moment. The moment of my birth.
Entering the world again in April 1989, I faced the darkness of the storm. My eyes were shut tight against that tornado, against death, obliteration. Absolute immersion in fear. The depth of fear of an 8-year-old girl huddled on a linoleum floor in the hallway of her elementary school, honestly believing her life was about to end forever. It took months for me to reenter the world of light, hope, and play.
Entering the world again at 15, I became a rebel with a cause overnight (the cause: to get as far away as possible from my mother). I delved into drinking, smoking, partying, dysfunctional dating and non-relationships, not valuing myself, my intelligence or my body. Despite all the yoga. My wild rebellion ebbed and flowed erratically but lasted a good 15 years, into my early thirties. All this was triggered by the discovery that my mom was cheating on my dad with my eye doctor when I was a freshman in high school. Did I blame my mother and idolize my father? Yes, to a certain extent. I also realize she did the best she could given her life circumstances and isn’t that what we all strive for? I know that my dad is not a saint and nobody’s perfect.
At age 29, I reentered the world and began to live my life primarily in Guatemala instead of the USA. I reentered the world at 32 and 33, numerous times, upon becoming pregnant, partnering up with Bladi, moving to Lake Atitlan, and becoming a mother. I was last reborn at age 45, stepping out into the light of mid-June after two weeks of despair and self-imprisonment.
Each day, each moment, each breath is an opportunity to start again. To be reborn in the here and now. Time is passing anyway. The clock ticks. Might as well spend the time in a meaningful way, creating, writing, loving, learning, teaching, being present with ourselves and our loved ones, being here for the situations and events and work and free time that comprises our life.
Soar like an eagle today, observing the road of your life from a higher perspective. Where have you been? Where are you going? What is your vision for the next year, or 5 or 10 years?
