In the sacred Mayan calendar, 6 Aj carries the energy of rhythm, responsibility, and embodied leadership. Aj is the nawal of the home, the sacred staff, the cornstalk, and ethical authority. It represents stability rooted in integrity, guidance through example, and the wisdom that comes from tending the inner hearth. Aj reminds us that true leadership begins within through how we care for our bodies, our households, our relationships, and our values.
The number 6 brings flow, balance, momentum, and sustainable rhythm. Today, 6 Aj is about walking your talk: aligning intention with action, strength with softness, responsibility with compassion. This is a day to return to what grounds you physically and emotionally, to lead with steadiness rather than control, and to remember that consistency is a form of devotion. 6 Aj favors embodied practices, tending to the home or community, setting healthy boundaries, and modeling the qualities you wish to see in others. It teaches that leadership does not require perfection only presence, honesty, and care.
I sometimes joke that I’m bi-coastal—though my “coasts” are two homes on Lake Atitlan in the highlands of Guatemala. One is in Pasajcap, a rustic eco-cabin on a spacious piece of land we’ve owned for ten and a half years, filled with trees, birdsong, and lake views through green foliage. The other is in Panajachel, a rented home that allows our daughter to commute easily to and from school and into the independence that she craves at 13.
Both homes have their gifts and their challenges. In Pasajcap, the land holds us with tranquility, space, and a sense of long-term rootedness. In Panajachel, life is more active and interconnected; stores of all kinds abound. Our daughter has her own little apartment upstairs, a setup she delights in—privacy, autonomy, and growing sovereignty. We have beloved pets in both places too: two dogs and two cats in Pasajcap; a recently rescued dog and a friendly orange neighbor cat in Pana.
Today, 6 Aj reminds me that home is more than a physical structure or a fixed location. Home is a quality of presence. It is something I carry in my body, in how I inhabit myself. Aj teaches that stability does not require rigidity and that responsibility does not have to feel heavy. With the rhythm of the number six, this is about finding balance, moving between places, roles, and identities with steadiness and care.
Aj invites me to sit up tall with a long spine. To stand with dignity. To hold myself with respect. To balance strength and flexibility, physically, but mentally, emotionally, and energetically. Leadership, Aj reminds me, begins with how I care for my body, my household, and my values, wherever I happen to be sleeping at night.
Home is wherever I am, when I am present.
Maltiox, 6 Aj.
