Today’s poem honors 1 Aq’ab’al, the dawn of new concepts and the mystery between night and day. Aptly, I got the inspiration to shift from descriptive/prose posts about the energy of each day in the sacred Mayan calendar to poetry early today under the light of the full supermoon and in the fertile darkness before the dawn. This energy is here to stay for the next 13 days of the Aq’ab’al trecena.
The day begins before the light.
The starry darkness gradually giving way
to the liminal space between night and day.
Aq’ab’al is the dawn’s pastel sunrise,
the curved line within the yin-yang symbol,
the butterfly emerging from her chrysalis, clumsily learning to fly,
the sweet spot between inhale and exhale
where possibility stirs within the bubbling pot of the great mystery.
Aq’ab’al is the bridge between two poles, the ability to see the totality of the opposing sides.
We are on the pathless path
Beginning again. Beginning here and now.
Not perfect, but in practice.
Lit up with gratitude
for the unseen hands that shape our becoming.
For our own hands, fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders and heart.
Aq’ab’al teaches that light is born from darkness.
That there is no rushing the dawn—
only trusting its daily arrival.
Within each doubt lives a question:
whatever answers feel hidden will someday bloom
in colors we cannot yet imagine.
Breathe into the unknown.
Let your heart be a lantern.
Offer thanks to Great Spirit,
to the soft hands of creation ever shaping you,
and to your own potent and powerful hands.
This morning is a new beginning,
a sacred threshold between shadow and sun.
Stand in it, open-handed, open-hearted.
Feeling the first warmth of light on your skin.
