1 Aj invites us to plant seeds of intention for our home, family, and community. It’s time to root ourselves in what grounds us while standing tall and open to what wants to be born. Today marks the beginning of the Aj trecena, a 13-day period to bring harmony to home and community through wise counsel and gentle leadership. These next 13 days ask us to cultivate both strength and flexibility, to honor our lineage while building foundations for the future.
Aj is the nawal of home, family, the sacred cornfield, and the four corners that define our place in the world. It is the green of nature. Our innocence and purity. Aj represents the roots that anchor us, the lineage we carry, and the understanding that true strength comes from knowing where we belong. This energy governs the physical and spiritual concept of home: the house we live in, the land we tend, the family (biological and/or chosen) that holds us, and the ancestral wisdom that lives in our bones and blood.
Aj embodies the authority of elders, the sacred staff that represents community leadership earned through experience. We have a responsibility to honor what came before us and create a foundation for those who will come after.
Like the cornstalk, Aj is strong yet flexible, hollow, and open to receive, teaching us to stand tall with a straight spine while remaining adaptable and humble. The number 1 brings beginnings, pure potential, and the planting of a new seed. 1 is the first breath, the blank page, the moment when intention becomes reality and we set the direction for everything that follows.
I realize I have a tendency to make decisions on my own without consulting my partner or family.
I want to build a foundation of more shared decision making, open discussion, heart-centered communication with my family. This is the seed I plant on 1 Aj: collaboration, not isolation. Listening, not just leading.
Home is Lake Atitlán. Home is our cabin in the forest in Pasajcap. Home is our little apartment in Panajachel. Home is my heart. Home is hugging my husband. Home is chatting with my daughter. Home is our fur family: currently two cats and three dogs.
Home is our sense of belonging, feeling safe, loved, and surprised by life. Saying “yes, thank you” to all emotions and situations, especially the challenging ones.
How can I stand tall in my values while remaining open and flexible? Great question. Essential question.
Aj says Soy quien soy. I am who I am. Strong yet flexible. Rooted yet open. Clear yet willing to change.
We are changing the plan. Maybe traveling in Mexico rather than Spain and Italy this summer. Because it’s closer, easier, less expensive. All three of us would go together. Europe 2027 maybe? Or I could take Jade in December for a couple weeks perhaps. But first things first.
We will be traveling within the trecena in 10 days. Jade and me, flying to Texas to visit family for her spring break.
I want to fortify my self-confidence, sense of dignity, and balance for this upcoming journey. I want to stand tall like the cornstalk—strong spine, open heart, flexible enough to bend without breaking.
This is what 1 Aj teaches and what the Aj trecena invites: bringing harmony to home and community through wise counsel, gentle leadership, and the humility to ask for help when we need it.
Maltiox, 1 Aj.
Guided Meditation for 1 Aj
Plant your feet firmly on the earth and feel the roots growing down through your spine, legs, and feet, deep into the ground. Stand tall like a cornstalk—strong, hollow, and open to receive guidance from the Heart of the Sky and the Heart of the Earth. Breathe into your home, your heart center: I belong, I am safe, I am loved.
